Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born into a musical family on 9 August 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. as well as a cousin of the singing sensation Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney started singing with the choir of the church in the early years of her childhood. At the age 15 she joined her mother in the background vocals for Chaka's hit Im Every Woman from 1978. In 1981, she briefly was a model and appeared on the Seventeen album cover. Also, she provided the backing vocals for Jermaine and Lou Rawls. Her first gig was as a vocalist in the band Material. the funk group from New York, Material in the year 1981. It was this high quality of her singing in the band that caught the attention of major record labels including Arista which she signed with in 1983 and where she was for the rest of her career. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut record for an artist in the year. The album had several smash singles, such as Saving All My Love for You How Do You Know You're a Good Person and The Greatest Love of All. This resulted in her having seven US number one hits consecutively. The singer beat the Beatles. It was the first US year the album had sold more than 3 million copies. Then it went on to be bought by over 25 million people worldwide and earned her the first Grammy. The Whitney sequel in 1987, featuring the singles What Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to build on the success of her debut album. It was, however, the 1992 movie The Bodyguard that solidified her status as one the world's most loved artist. Even though the movie and performances of the actress were not well-received, the soundtrack album that featured her interpretation of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was her most popular single and albums for many months. The album sold over 44 million copies around the world. In 1993, it was also when she got married Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition singer with whom she bore her only child Bobbi Kristina Brown. About this time her well-documented addiction to drugs began. By 1996, Bobbi Kristina Brown was using drugs daily.
